The Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy seeks a Staff Associate to research the economics of a multinational corporation’s production process. The incumbent will report to the Director for Sustainable Energy at The Earth Institute at Columbia University.

The project, conducted in conjunction with a major multinational company, aims to identify and lay the groundwork for sustainable engineering opportunities within the company’s operations worldwide. The project should also accomplish two subobjectives: to develop a general methodology for evaluating sustainable operations and investments; and to identify specific technical interventions for carbon management tailored to the company’s operations. In addition, the project will create a platform for Earth Institute researchers to examine how best-practice, low-carbon energy technologies and policies can function within an international manufacturing firm.

The Staff Associate will look at questions related to the company’s energy and carbon inputs. He/she will identify specific technical proposals that could be deployed within the worldwide operations and write reports summarizing ways of providing incentives for energy reductions. The incumbent will also create a methodology for prioritizing points of intervention that include the estimated cost of technical intervention, the alteration to existing manufacturing processes, and the potential carbon savings. The Staff Associate will further provide research support for the identification of carbon management and energy-efficiency options based on the principles and carbon/energy flows. This project will examine opportunities to create internal incentives for carbon savings across geographies and product lines. The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in environmental economics or a related field. Appointment is for six months with possible extension. The screening of applications will begin immediately; the search will remain open at least 30 days from the posting date until the position is filled.
