Seven Faculty Positions
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Mass., is continuing a major investment in the life sciences. In 2007 the university opened the WPI Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center (LSBC), which houses the life sciences-related graduate research programs of five academic departments and the WPI Bioengineering Institute (BEI). Since that time, WPI has recruited 12 new full-time faculty members in the life sciences and bioengineering, bringing to more than 30 the number of faculty working in interdisciplinary clusters within a strongly collaborative environment in the LSBC. As a result of this investment, graduate research and external research funding have increased considerably, with faculty awarded major funding from the NIH, NSF, DARPA, and other agencies.
In 2008-09 WPI recruited five new full-time life science and bioengineering faculty members across five departments, including a new head for the Biomedical Engineering Department. In 2009-10 we are seeking to fill seven tenure-track positions at the junior and senior levels in five departments, including a new head for the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. The ideal candidates for these positions will have research interests and expertise that are complementary to our current research areas, and be committed to collaboration among multidisciplinary teams and to securing external funding.
Applicants for department head and senior positions will be recognized leaders in their field and have a strong record of securing extramural funding. Applicants at the assistant professor level must have postdoctoral research experience with extramural support, or strong promise to obtain funding. All applicants must hold the PhD and have a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. To apply, and for more on the WPI Life Sciences Initiative, including detailed position descriptions, visit wpi.edu/+lsi.
Founded in 1865, WPI is one of the nation’s oldest and most innovative technological universities. Frimley, Surrey and Hatfield, Hertfordshire
From reducing pollution to cleaning up rivers… from managing waste to building flood defences… we’re responding to challenges that come from all quarters - from industry, from development, from consumerism, from climate change. The Thames region is home to about a quarter of the entire population of England and Wales. As the numbers keep rising, so do the pressures on the environment, from flood risk and waste to the strain on water resources and the hazards of pollution. Our regional team is tackling some of the country’s biggest environmental issues and developing innovative sustainable solutions.
Our Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC)/Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) teams regulate over 4,000 organisations dealing with radioactive material in the UK.
Joining our team of Regulatory Officers, your primary focus will be on regulation and permitting, across SE England, under the Radioactive Substances Act (RSA 93). Adhering to strict legislation and policies, you'll enjoy working both autonomously and part of a team in a role that requires influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice from a wide range of different people. This will be achieved through visiting a wide variety of sites, including hospitals, universities and industry, but not nuclear installations.
Degree qualified, or equivalent, you will have worked with or regulated radioactive substances under RSA 93 or have acquired relevant knowledge through education within a scientific or engineering discipline. You will need to show initiative and be adaptable, flexible and willing to learn new skills. You will be expected to make decisions based on sometimes limited information and be prepared to take appropriate enforcement action. The role is nominally office based but you will be regularly expected to visit sites over a large geographical area, therefore a lease car will be provided and you must have a full driving licence. Further training will be provided to obtain professional qualifications as required.
