The position, which reports to the Director, will:
- coordinate IARC’s new initiative on cancer in Africa, including provision of support to the Gambia Hepatitis Intervention Study
- develop new academic initiatives, including major opportunities for extra-budgetary funding
- assist by the preparation of scientific documents and informed briefings
- supervise the newly created Laboratory Support and Biobank Group which will be headed by a Laboratory Manager
The ideal candidate will have the ability to:
Manage and coordinate scientific research projects.
Draft high-level scientific documents.
Understand scientific literature related to cancer.
Facilitate the coordination and partnership of various collaborators in an international, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment using his/her advanced interpersonal skills.
S/he will have background knowledge of cancer with respect to mechanisms, causes and/or prevention. Knowledge of issues relating to biobanking would be desirable.
Recruitment Profile:
Qualifications: PhD or equivalent in biomedical sciences, epidemiology or a related area. Training in scientific administration is desirable.
Experience: Proven experience in conducting research relevant to cancer, including time studying for a higher degree. Demonstrated ability to write scientific articles e.g. in peer-reviewed journals

</description></item><item><title>Laboratory Manager P2</title><link>http://www.newscientistjobs.com/jobs/job/laboratory-manager-p2-france-200645394.htm</link><pubDate>Fri, 20 Nov 2009 14:49:57 +0000</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">196488</guid><description>The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), based in Lyons, France, has an exciting opening for a Laboratory Manager who will ensure that (i) the IARC Biobank collection is maintained and handled under optimal conditions consistent with agreements with collaborators and with best ethical practice; (ii) the core laboratory facilities of the Agency’s Laboratory Services and Biobank (LSB) Group are organized and operated so that they best support the scientific activities of all laboratory-based research groups.
The incumbent will report to the Agency’s Scientific Officer and is advised and guided by two steering committees, the Laboratory Steering Committee (LSC) and the Biobank Steering Committee (BSC). The Laboratory Manager will have responsibility for the supervision of technical staff and the support of a Laboratory Research Assistant. The role involves close working relationships and co-operation with scientists throughout the Agency and with outside collaborators.
The ideal candidate will have:
Excellent laboratory skills in relation to manipulation of biological samples.
Awareness of quality and security standards.
Knowledge of related ethical regulations including an understanding of the ethical and practical issues in relation to the handling and storage of biological samples. 
Knowledge of Information Technology skills permitting work on Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Recruitment Profile:
Qualifications: PhD in biology or related laboratory-based subject. IT qualifications in relation to LIMS and involvement in epidemiological studies and understanding of statistical principles would be an asset.
Experience: At least two years of postdoctoral research experience as well as laboratory experience including the organization of shared laboratory facilities and systematic storage of biological samples. Proven experience in handling, storage and retrieval of biological samples. Supervisory experience of technical staff. Previous experience in protein and nucleic acid research and in large-scale epidemiological studies in relation to cancer would be desirable.
