The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the UK's National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) invite applications for the position of Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO), located at NOCS. NOCS is a collaborative centre between the Natural Environment Research Council and the University of Southampton.
The Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) project is one of four core projects of the WCRP. CLIVAR coordinates and facilitates national and international activities that contribute to our understanding and prediction of climate variability and change on seasonal, decadal and centennial timescales. The Director of the Project Office takes a leading role in the development and implementation of CLIVAR under the general guidance of the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group.
The successful applicant will provide science and administrative leadership of the ICPO and of the CLIVAR programme. Your role will be to oversee and manage the implementation of the plans and activities of each of the project elements of CLIVAR in support of the overall mission and strategy of WCRP. You will maintain active links between CLIVAR and the wider science community stimulating and organising scientific meetings, workshops and conferences and ensuring the timely flow of information on CLIVAR. You will be responsible for the management of the Project Office staff budget and operations and for maintaining and developing its funding base.
You will have a Ph.D or equivalent in a relevant field and considerable experience of working in climate-science. A proven ability in science management including winning external funding is essential and you should have demonstrated the ability to conceive, organise and manage interdisciplinary and international science activities and initiate and sustain international cooperation.
This post is for 3 years and the salary is in the range of £47,630 to £60,420 per annum. Benefits include RCUK pension scheme and up 30 days leave and 10 - public/privilege days. The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally.

- Experience in Greenhouse Gas verification processes - including information auditing.

This is a technical post combined with a research studentship opportunity. We are looking for an experienced environmental science technician who will provide specialist technical support for our geography and environmental sciences teaching and research. Your responsibilities will also include the direct assistance for students and researchers.
Adaptable and eager to learn you will be self-motivated and an excellent communicator. You will be educated to HND/ Degree/ NVQ level 4 in an environmental sciences subject or have equivalent experience. You will have proven experience of working in environmental sciences, which is not likely to have been attained in less than 3 years.
This post is combined with a research studentship in one of the following areas:
freshwater and terrestrial ecology, biomonitoring, plant pathology, water resources management or environmental assessment.
You will be expected to work half time (mornings only, five days per week) as a member of technical staff and the other half as a research student.
