We require an experienced developer to fulfill the role of Technical Lead of the Literature Services group at the EBI.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall technical design of the Literature Services and the day-to-day management of programmers in the team. An important part of the job will be to work with developers from other EBI groups and external collaborating groups to improve the integration of literature resources with other databases and meet service requirements.

Additional components of the job will include:
• Ensuring coding standards are maintained and documented;
• Assisting with recruitment of technical staff;
• Advising on the use of new technologies; and
• Representing the group at meetings and conferences.

The Technical Lead will work closely with and report to the Group Leader of Literature Services.

The availability of online journals, shifting publishing models, and the widespread adoption of web search and social networking applications has created new opportunities for biomedical literature access, communication and integration. The Literature Services at the EBI develops public resources based on the scientific literature, including bibliographic databases such as MEDLINE/PubMed, full-text databases such as PubMedCentral, and patents. The information is linked to full-text articles, and integrated with biomedical databases such as Uniprot, EMBL, PDB and Interpro. These resources can be searched via CiteExplore, which integrates text-mining functions from Whatizit to link biological concepts to protein, gene and gene ontology databases.

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK. It is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

The senior software engineer will ideally have:
• A university degree in computer science, or in a scientific discipline with a significant computational component.
• At least 5 years experience using a wide range of technologies/languages, for example, C++, Java, Oracle, SQL, XML, XSLT, SOAP/REST.
• Project management experience.
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal and interpersonal skills.
• Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to operate in an international environment.
• Experience in the biomedical publishing industry.
• Knowledge of text mining and/or molecular biology.
• A passion for delivering world-class information services to the scientific community.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
