The Department seeks to recruit a doctoral research student to work on experimental and computational aspects of the mechanics of ferroelectric crystals. The studentship is supported by an EPSRC project starting in October 2009, with the objective to improve understanding of microstructure in these materials. The studentship will be focussed mainly on experimental characterisation of the materials by methods such as atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The project is acollaboration with University of Texas, Austin, and includes provision for a 6-month exchange visit to Austin, which will include training in materials modelling.

No prior experience of ferroelectric materials is needed. However, applicants should be able to demonstrate an interest in materials characterisation or modelling. A good first degree (at least 2.1) in engineering, physics or mathematics is desirable.

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate an ability to analyse problems in materials engineering.

A student stipend will be paid for three years (subject to satisfactory progress) and will be in the region of £14,200pa. In addition, university and college fees will be covered (at the “home” student level) for the successful candidate)

Candidates are expected to meet the Graduate Admissions criteria available by clicking the link within the 'View Contact Details' section below. A full graduate application must be made at the same time as applying for this studentship. Further details about making a graduate application are available by clicking the Apply Now button below.

Please send a letter of application for the studentship, which should explain your interest in and relevant experience for the advertised post, together with a detailed CV to Mr CJ Scotcher at the address listed within the 'View Contact Details' section below.
