Gevo, Inc. is a high energy, team-oriented company that is pioneering the advanced green energy industry. We are looking for a Research Scientist Protein Biochemist, based in Englewood, Colorado. This role is responsible for Characterization and engineering of enzymes for optimal performance within biochemical pathways and characterization of protein variants, generation of protein variants, (includes high throughput assays), phenotypic characterization of strains expressing engineered enzymes.

Requirements include:
• PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent;
• 3 - 5 years of professional work experience in a lab, working with biochemical and analytical technique and protein characterization;
• Strongly prefer candidates with hands-on experience with Biophysical methods (EPR spectroscopy, CD, UV spectroscopy);
• Prefer candidates with strong overall background in the biotechnological sciences;
• Demonstrated ability to independently perform basic microbiological techniques such as aseptic technique, microbial culture work, UV/VIS spectroscopy;
• Extensive knowledge of protein chemistry and Enzymology;
• Basic knowledge of organic / analytical chemistry;
• Knowledge of basic microbiological concepts and terminology;
• Demonstrated ability to overexpress proteins in microorganisms;
• Demonstrated ability to work under strict timelines;
• Strong organizational skills, with ability to execute multiple parallel projects.

Responsibilities include:
• Characterization of protein variants by SDS PAGE, native PAGE, Western Blot, Gel filtration
• Development and optimization of in vitro enzyme assays
• Measurement and interpretation of enzyme kinetics data. Application of the fundamentals of enzyme kinetics to real-world problems
• Analysis of enzymatic reactions using HPLC and GC analysis
• Generation and interpretation of biochemical and analytical data
• Protein purification (IEC, SEC, HIC, AFC)
• Analysis of metal cofactors, Measurement of redox potentials
• Phenotypical characterization of strains expressing protein variants.
• Basic microbiology techniques such as single colony purification, dilution series, plate counts, and aseptic technique.
• Mutagenesis of enzymes
• Accurately preparing reagents of specified pH, ionic strength, or concentration.
• Properly recording and documenting all experiments and resulting data.
• Processing data for subsequent review and reporting.
• Communicating results and lab issues in a timely manner with clarity & precision, both verbally and in writing.
• Assist with lab maintenance as necessary (media preparation, autoclaving supplies and waste, dishes).
