The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, is an academic non-profit foundation whose mission is to provide core bioinformatics ressources to the national and internationa life science community and to coordinate the field of bioinformatics in Switzerland.
Four postdoctoral positions are available at the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and at Biozentrum of the University of Basel within an interdisciplinary Sinergia project funded by the SNF, which aims at understanding the molecular basis underlying the cellular c-di-GMP signaling network in bacteria (for a recent review see: Schirmer and Jenal, Nature Reviews Microbiology 7(2009)724 ). Structural, dynamic, and functional aspects of c-di-GMP signaling components are investigated embedded within an interactive environment of research teams in computational,structural, and cellular biology.
Techniques include bioinformatics analysis, crystal structure determination and homology modeling of representatives of the most important signaling components. The conformational dynamics of these components in solution will be addressed by single molecule FRET experiments to understand their function and regulation. Mechanistic models of catalysis and regulation will be validated and refined systematically using in vitro and in vivo assays as readouts using well-developed pathogenic and non-pathogenic model system for c-di-GMP signaling."

Position in molecular biology, microbiology, or biochemistry (group Urs Jenal)
Candidates should have a strong background in protein biochemistry and/or molecular biology techniques.
Position in structural biology or biochemistry (group Tilman Schirmer)
Experience in crystallography and/or enzymology advantageous, but not mandatory.
Position in biophysics, biochemistry, or molecular biology (group Dagmar Klostermeier)
Candidates should have a strong background in optical spectroscopy, preferentially at the single molecule level, and/or molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques.
Position in bioinformatics or computational biology (group Torsten Schwede)
Candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics, protein sequence analysis, data mining and/or computational structural biology.
