A postdoctoral position is available immediately in Maine Institute for Human Genetics & Health (MIHGH). MIHGH is a non-profit corporation and subsidiary of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. It represents a collaborative research initiative between Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, the Jackson Laboratory and the University of Maine to support translational and clinical research.
We are seeking a Post Doc to join our Bone Genomics & Cancer group based in the Jackson Laboratory. The focus of the research opportunity will be skeletal abnormalities associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). NF1 is the most common inherited cancer predisposition syndrome affecting 1 in 3500 individuals worldwide. In addition, NF1 individuals frequently show abnormal skeletal development (scoliosis, congenital bowing, and congenital pseudoarthroses, etc), and a juvenile osteoporosis with increased fracture risk. These skeletal abnormalities are poorly understood. They can result in significant morbidity, and currently therapeutic options are limited. We are using genetically modified mouse and ES cell models, as well as human samples to investigate the pathogenesis of NF1-related skeletal abnormalities and test some therapeutic targets. MIHGH is also developing a new collaborative program in translational cancer research, supported by Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Cancer Care of Maine, The Jackson Lab, the University of Maine and EMHS. Fellows will work in a collaborative, interactive team setting and be responsible for planning, implementation, execution and publication of chosen projects.
