- Through collaborations and internal efforts, apply molecular genetic and pharmacology approaches to functionally identify and validate cancer targets using advanced in vivo models of disease.

Organizational Relationships:
- Reports in to Group Leader Target ID & Val or Head Disease Specialty Area

Primary Duties:
- Lead a lab group and manage collaborations focused on identifying and validating cancer targets in advanced animal models.
- Apply molecular genetic approaches to modulate targets in vivo, assess functional impact on cancer initiation and progression in efforts to identify and validate cancer targets. This will include RNAi, viral vector delivery, transgenics, KO, in vivo mutagenesis, and pharmacologic approaches to modulate targets in vivo
- Work closely with the Specialized Models group to define and develop the most advanced in vivo models for tumor types of interest in the Disease specialty group, including orthotopic xenografts and advanced transgenic and KO mice, cancer models in other species eg dog
- Conduct various assays on in vivo models to further characterize the relevance of the model and the impact of target modulation towards understanding disease process and adverse effects
- Partnering with external collaborators to conduct experiments as above
- Use Granite, Onco-Lims, and Biobook to capture data from animal experiments, and use various software tools (SIGHTS, Spotfire, protocol registration and development) to effectively capture and analyze data
- Partnering with computational biologists, conduct complex data analysis to decipher mechanism of action of perturbation/modulation leading to the generation of hypotheses for new targets and mechanisms for cancer therapy
- Contribute to strategy and tactics for Target ID & Val within Disease specialty group, and ensure technical interface across disease specialty groups.
- Contribute to building a culture that embraces continuous learning and improvement, increasing technical skill base and disease biology expertise; take a proactive role in personal growth and scientific development

Training & Education Preferred:
- PhD or MD/PhD or DVM in Molecular Biology, Pharmacology (or a comparable biological science) with a cancer-related focus
- Deep knowledge of targets and pathways of importance to tumorigenesis and progression
- Expert in designing and executing in vivo cancer model experiments
- Expert with all levels of animal handling, small animal surgery
- Fluency with transgenic and KO approaches, RNAi, pharmacology
- DNA and RNA assay technologies, protein immunoassay technologies
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of software tools to support data analysis tasks (e.g., SIGHTS, Spotfire, protocol development and registration).
- Have a good understanding of the future of the cancer field in general

Prior Experience Preferred:
- Experience working primarily on cancer biology, preferably in one or more of the tumor types covered in this Disease Specialty group
- Experience (post degree) in industry or academic lab focused on models of cancer
- Hands on, extensive experience with at least one of the target modulation approaches as above
- Ideal would be experience with in vivo insertional mutagenesis, or in vivo shRNA screens, for the purpose of identifying cancer targets
- Demonstrated ability to supervise direct reports
- Ideally the candidate will be fluent with omics approaches toward characterizing animal models
- Ideally, the candidate will have demonstrated skills and success in networking and partnerships/collaborations
