We are seeking a cooperation officer for the Protein and Nucleotide data Greoup (PANDA).

The group cooperation officer will be responsible for the overall monitoring and supporting of cooperation between the different databases developed and maintained by the PANDA group at EBI, as well as for interfacing between the EMBL and EBI administration, and the management of the group, and interfacing with other collaborators, such as SIB or Sanger Institute.

The cooperation officer needs to be familiar with the different funding strategies of different projects and monitor the status of PANDA internal milestones and deliverables. Thus s/he has to collaborate closely with the direct team leaders in PANDA project managers and the heads of the PANDA group, as well as with external project partners, where appropriate, and internal administration staff. The cooperation officer has to ensure a sufficient flow of information between all these parties. S/he will alert the heads of the PANDA group of any deviations from the work plans of the different projects.

An important task of the cooperation officer is to take part in the writing of internal proposals and progress reports, and to make sure that sufficient documentation is provided by the project participants. Also, s/he is expected to organise the weekly group meeting and occasional other meetings and retreats in terms of scientific contents. S/he will maintain some of the group’s internal websites, interface with administrative activitiesorganigrams and staff lists.

In addition we expect the successful candidate to participate in strategic discussions, providing feedback for the feasiblility of different inter-group activities, and provide proactive management for projects spanning different PANDA areas, coordinating between Team Leaders and senior PANDA management.

The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

The PANDA group currently comprises of more than 160 staff members, organised into nine teams, each of which has their own leadership.

The ideal candidate will be a competent scientist with some 5 years professional experience in a research or biological database environment, who has some experience with science management and project and grant administration. Good knowledge of biological databases and bioinformatics is certainly an advantage, and a general willingness to understand issues associated with tools that may be needed to use for particular projects.

S/he should be possess a personality that commands the team's respect and who can be consulted and help with most issues that can occur within the scope of scientific administration and project management. S/he must be well-organised and have excellent people skills. Above all, we expect a very professional approach and a proactive attitude.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
