At GlaxoSmithKline, the Genetics division resides within Drug Discovery and applies human genetics expertise to projects in all phases of the GSK pipeline. The division supports GSK strategy by providing deep scientific insight to improve target validation and the efficacy/safety of innovative new medicines.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Genetics Data Quality Scientist with expertise in DNA interrogation platforms to join a team of highly experienced scientists in the Genetics Data Quality group. This group provides technical expertise to support Genetics projects by overseeing the quality control of genetic data generated both internally and externally using a wide array of cutting edge platforms, as well as providing intellectual input into the interpretation of this data, and identifying opportunities for the integration of new platforms into future studies.

As a Genetics Data Quality Scientist you will be responsible for quality assurance and quality control of Genetics laboratory processes and data. This includes the laboratory processes from receipt of DNA samples through the generation of genetic data to the release of quality data, ensuring that data delivered from the Genetics organisation is of a suitable standard and is fit for purpose. In addition you will provide expertise and guidance for the utilisation of, and interpretation of data from standard and specialised DNA interrogation platforms.

You will have the opportunity to develop, implement and maintain processes to monitor, assess, and improve Genetics laboratory data quality including the development of QC plans to assure the integrity of samples and data and collation and assessment of data from external genotyping and sequencing vendors. Others responsibilities, dependant on experience, include activities to provide intellectual and technical expertise for DNA interrogation methods/platforms to the Genetics and Clinical organisations. This will include individual and multiplex genotyping assays, WGS, HLA typing, Molecular Diagnostics and next generation platforms. You will be expected to work in a matrix team environment, working closely with project teams to ensure successful completion of project work.

Basic qualifications required:

• BSc, or equivalent in genetics, biology or related, with practical experience in human genetics, genotyping technologies, and molecular biology.
• You will have a detailed knowledge of a wide spectrum of genotyping methodologies such as, Illumina GoldenGate and Infinium, Affimetrix genotyping platforms, TaqMan and other FRET based technologies, Invader, Luminex, and DNA sequencing processes.
• You will have experience in use of LIMS systems and informatics tools necessary for handling large data sets. Position requires excellent communication and good influencing skills.

Preferred qualifications:

• Second degree (PhD or MSc), or equivalent in genetics, biology or related, with practical experience in analysing and trouble shooting complex data sets.
• In addition you will have a basic understanding of the following: MHC region, Molecular Diagnostic platforms and the IVD space, next generation sequencing platforms, and/or WGS and CNV analysis.
• Ideally you will have experience in matrix working and influencing within laboratory operations, analysis and therapy team staff regarding generation and use of genetic laboratory data.
