DEAN, FACULTY OF SCIENCE
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA

After 44 years of innovative teaching, research, and community outreach, Simon Fraser University (SFU) has become a university of choice for students who seek academic excellence and a diverse experience. As one of ‘Canada’s Top 100 Employers’, SFU is also a preferred destination for high quality faculty and staff. With three campuses, 26,000 undergrad students, 4,400 grad students, 100,000 alumni and over 800 tenure-track faculty, SFU is a stimulating and vibrant organization that promotes connectedness and a spirit of community. With the pending completion of the current Dean’s appointment after seven transformative years, the opportunity now exists for new leadership for the Faculty of Science.

The Faculty of Science has a solid foundation of excellence in research, teaching and community engagement. With 3,700 undergraduate and 630 graduate students registered for the Fall 2009 semester, 190 tenure-track faculty members, and 18 Canada Research Chairs, the Faculty of Science prides itself on its thriving research community. Attracting top researchers worldwide, SFU’s Faculty of Science achieved an 84% success rate in the 2006/07 (NSERC) Discovery Grants competition, nearly 15% above the national average.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science is a member of the senior administration of the university sharing responsibility with the President, six Vice Presidents and nine fellow Deans for the overall management of the institution. The new Dean will encourage an interdisciplinary approach, support academic excellence, and promote originality in research, scholarship and teaching. He/she will build an enhanced student experience and will attract and support creative faculty members.

An accomplished academic and inspiring organizational leader, you have earned your Ph.D. in a relevant science discipline and have a reputation for excellent scholarship and student engagement. Drawing upon past successes at the level of Dean, Associate Dean, Chair, or as Director of an Institute or Centre, you will lead the celebration of the Faculty’s ongoing success and promote the faculty both internally and externally. This is an exciting opportunity for an academic leader whose passion, communication and strategic skills will enhance the reputation of the Faculty within the broader community.
