Consultant / Project Manager – C/PM
Bio Nano Consulting is a dynamic new specialist consultancy providing a solution-focused service to biomedical companies operating in industries such as pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices and drug delivery in the UK and Europe.
London-based BNC facilitates access to a range of high-value instrumentation and world-leading expertise through our partners at University College London (UCL), Imperial College and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in order to address the real-world problems of our clients.
Primary responsibilities:
Within Bio Nano Consulting (BNC), this initial C/PM will take overall responsibility for delivering on our client projects. Other key aspects of this role will include assisting with business development activities necessary to identify potential clients, plan and cost projects and secure contracts and general management activities.
The successful candidate will require strong project management, organisational and communication skills as this role requires all of these skill-sets. Furthermore, the candidate will have professional experience in working within the healthcare industry, specifically within companies operating in the pharmaceutical, diagnostics, medical device or similar industries or in consultancies that service these industries.
Part of the C/PM’s role will be client-facing involving gaining familiarity with the client’s technology and products, capturing the client’s requirements and project specifications, proposing a project-solution, providing the client with a clear implementation plan and working with project scientists to ensure deliverables are produced to schedule and within budget.
He/she will actively assist with the production of final reports and other deliverables. The C/PM will also add substantial additional value through expert input to design, prototyping, testing, characterisation and validation projects.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Take overall responsibility for managing BNC’s client-based projects through the full project lifecycle, including:
a. Conduct needs analysis, project outline, & costing;
b. Develop full project proposal in conjunction with BNC CEO;
c. Manage project scientists/consultants carrying out projects on day-to-day basis;
d. Manage scientific consultants to ensure delivery of project deliverables on time & to budget;
e. Assist scientific consultants with producing professional reports and other written work;
f. Present results to clients, as needed.
2. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: Work with CEO to assist with identifying and securing new business, including:
a. Identify client targets;
b. Research to understand client’s needs and requirements;
c. Design projects (in conjunction with CEO and project scientists) to address client’s needs;
d. Assist CEO with producing project plan, proposal and costing;
e. Participate in external business development activities including conferences and trade shows, as required;
3. GENERAL MANAGEMENT: Work with CEO to ensure smooth operations, including:
a. Assist CEO with monitoring responsibilities associated with the London Development Agency and the DTI-TSB including quarterly inputs onto the appropriate website and ensuring full compliance with funders’ requirements;
b. Manage day-to-day activities of project scientists/consultants to ensure optimum delivery;
c. Manage facilities’ interactions, especially; to ensure instrument maintenance and to handle day-today issues, as required;
d. Manage computer/visualisation suite at LCN to optimise commercial usage;
e. Coordinate and work in multi-functional teams to plan and manage a project portfolio;
f. Present data, designs, and results both internally and externally to ensure good client relationships;
g. Co-develop, brainstorm and share design ideas with clients where appropriate;
h. Consult to client on technical, commercialisation and IP issues;
i. Maintain full client confidentiality and ensure that no intellectual property from one project influences/carries-over to other projects.
C/PM Person Profile:
Individuals most suited to this post are likely to have proven professional experience as consultants or project managers within such industries as pharmaceuticals, diagnostics or medical devices. Proven technical problem-solving skills are a must.
In addition, experience in new-product development, product/project planning and management within R & D or product development organisations would be advantageous. Candidates will have a degree in a technical/engineering/physical sciences subject; a PhD or MSc would be desirable.
Furthermore, candidates will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will have an ability to work both stand-alone and as part of a team.
The role requires extensive use of a candidate’s own initiative to ensure that all projects are run to timetable/cost. The candidate will have a decisive nature and the ability to secure the support of external academic, medical and commercial staff/ resources.
They will be able to demonstrate a flair for effective design/delivery of technology from the IT and medical devices area. Confidence in working in a busy, business-focused environment with highly-skilled individuals, coupled with the ability to handle pressure on occasions when there is heavy workload, is essential.
Capability to handle several projects simultaneously plus effectiveness in the use of office and project management software are essential requirements for success in this role.
Other skills of benefit would include project management experience within a biomedical and/or medical devices area and a general understanding of regulatory requirements for products in the drugs, diagnostics and medical device areas.
